In theater, a Master Class is a teaching or demonstration session in front of an audience for prominent, accomplished actors and directors. The term "Master Class" is borrowed from music. It means a special concert by a great musician. At the Master Class event "Theatre & Education: Teaching What's Important," several esteemed theatre artists shared their techniques and insights to help make education more meaningful and engaging for students--and all who seek to be involved in it. In the words of Wendy Wasserstein, "It takes enormous help from everyone in order to do things that are necessary for democracy. For example, you must have information-driven education in order to create a democracy. You must have informed citizens, which is why the arts are so important." The Master Class event "Mastering Performance: The Practice & The Person" featured Terrence McNally, Founding Artistic Director of Goodspeed Musicals; Lucy Thurber, Artistic Director of East West Players; Lynn Redgrave, Founder and Executive Director of the New Repertory Theatre; and Dr. Annette Breyer, Headmaster of High School of Performing Arts in Washington D.C.. This daylong Workshop/Master Class for students was presented with support from The Christopher B. Smith Charitable Foundation.
